Making Technology Available for Seniors

I’ve always thought that what makes a great network/systems engineer isn’t our ability to understand complex technology (although that’s certainly a prerequisite), but the ability to take that complex technology explain it simply to a non-technical person. Einstein once said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough”. In business that translates to explaining to the executives, line managers and users exactly how a new architecture is going to help them do their job better, faster, or cheaper. At home, that means being able to help friends and family enjoy the benefits of the latest technology, without the frustrations.

Here are some suggestions I’ve come across I’ve come across for making technology available for older users- like Grandma and Grandpa. Or perhaps Mom and Dad if you are a bit older yourself. Or maybe that non-technical friend… Anyway, here are a few resources and ideas to make sure that your house isn’t the one that had the VCR constantly flashing 12:00, 12:00, 12:00.

Remote Controls

Thermostats

Back when my Dad was growing up, you had an analog thermostat. You turned it up, it got warmer. Down it got colder. If it was fancy it had numbers. Today’s thermostats allow you to program them to turn the heat on when you’re going to be home, and to turn it off when you’re away. In addition to making the home more comfortable, they can also save quit a bit on heating and cooling. Install one, or have one installed for your older family members. Just be sure to leave written instructions next to it if they need do reprogram it, or be ready for a phone call or two.

Cell Phones

As cool as that smart phone is, it’s not always the best choice. Some older users are intimidated by all the buttons- or the lack thereof. Rather than a handy tool, they can be very upsetting. You may want to consider helping them with a cell phone specifically designed with bigger buttons, a large display, and simpler functions, such as these phones for seniors.

If you do opt for the smart phone, make things easier for them by enlarging the icons, customizing the icons so the most common are on the home screen, and populating their contacts and speed dials. Sometimes it also helps to write down a “cheat sheet” on an index card for them to carry in their purse or wallet as well.

Putting it All Together

Over the last couple of decades, technology has graced us with a number of gadgets that can make life more interesting, easier and fun. With a little upfront work on your part, you can make sure the seniors in your life enjoy it too.
