The National MS Society helps people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and their families, cope with what can be a devastating disease. MS is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the myelin sheath of nerve cells, which acts as an insulator and serves to conduct the nerve impulses quickly. The effect can interfere with walking, movement, and even speech. Muscles control all movement, and nerves control those muscles. That means that each case of MS is as unique as the individual affected- there is no typical MS.
The MS Society, which has a chapter in all 50 states, provides funding for researchers, as well as educating new researchers. They are active in legislation and protecting the rights of the of people afflicted by MS, as well as providing counseling on dealing with insurance, physicians, and the emotional impact of a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. They provide job training, and assist in job placement. If the MS patient cannot work, they help with disability paperwork, which can be quite convoluted take years to complete.
In addition, the MS Society maintains an active community where people with MS can connect, and discuss treatment, symptoms, and coping strategies. They maintain up to date information on the latest research, as well as details on all of the current courses of therapy. In short, the MS Society provides information, researchers, support and comfort to the 400,000 Americans who suffer with this disease. To help the MS Society fight this disease, please donate. Thank you.
